Abstract
755,023. Portable winches. WARBURTON, R. E. L., and SANDFORD, W. H. Dec. 23, 1954 [Jan. 1, 1954], No. 20/54. Class 78 (5). A portable winch comprises a mounting 3, at least two spaced driven drums 1A, 1B mounted for rotation in the mounting about parallel axes, the drums being formed with circumferential grooves permitting a rope to be coiled around and between them; and a clamping device 21 associated with one of the drums, comprising an arm 21 pivoted to the mounting, a roller 20 rotatably mounted on the arm, and means 23 to press the roller into contact with the idle leg 30 of the rope. As shown, the winch drums 1A, 1B are driven by handle 14 through worm 12, the clamping arm being caused to effect an initial grip upon the idle leg 30 of the rope by adjustable knob 26A, and the strap 8 of the mounting being pivoted at 9 so that when pin 10 is released the rope may be threaded round the drums. The winch is secured at eye 28A and by rope 31 to the load to be moved and to a fixture, so that the pull on the rope 31 increases the pressure of roller 20 on its drum.
