[Also in Division F2] In a hand-operated winch controlling, for example, the elevation of a screw auger conveyer, the handle (not shown) is welded to a nut 10 clamping a toothed ratchet-wheel 6 against a shoulder 8 on the winch spindle 1. Forward rotation of the handle to wind up the cable 4 tightens the clamping, backrunning being prevented by a pawl engaging the ratchetwheel. Reverse rotation of the handle slackens the nut 10 and so allows the spindle 1 and the handle to rotate freely with respect to the wheel 6 as the cable unwinds. If the free rotation of the handle is arrested it screws along the spindle to clamp the wheel 6, thereby stopping the spindle 1. The ratchet-wheel 6 may comprise a square plate.
