Abstract

694,496. Winch drives. SUTCLIFFE, Ltd., R. May 8, 1951. [April 25, 1950] No. 10180/50. Class 78 (v). Winch drive 21 can be driven by hand directly from squared end 15, or indirectly from squared end 8 through worm 6, worm pinion 4 loosely mounted on drive shaft 1, and ratchet wheel 12 engaging with pinion 4 through teeth formed on their respective faces and being pressed into such engagement by spring 14, said ratchet wheel being keyed to shaft 5 so as to move therealong whilst rotating therewith. The meshing of worm 6 with its pinion 4 acts as a self-sustaining gear. In use, the cable of the winch drive may be employed to tighten a conveyer belt, the handle being applied firstly to square end 15 and then to square end 8, the ratchet and worm sustaining the winch in the meantime.
