Abstract

1402995 Lift safety devices M J BRISLAND 23 Oct 1972 [25 Oct 1971] 49361/71 Heading B8L A safety device mounted on a load suspended by a main cable MC, comprises an anvil 7 against which an auxiliary cable AC is clamped by a spring biased cam 6 in response to slackness in the main cable. The main cable MC supporting the load, extends between two pulleys 4 mounted at the ends of an arm 3 secured to a spindle 2 rotatably mounted in a plate 1, the cam 6 with cable gripping teeth 8 also being secured to the spindle 2. The taut cable MC biases the pulleys 4 and therefore the cam 6 against the force of a spring 9, into a cam disengaged position. Any slack in the main cable permits the spring 9 to rotate the cam 6 into gripping engagement with the auxiliary cable AC to arrest the load, the auxiliary cable coextending with the or each main cable, and a safety device being associated with each main cable. In another embodiment the anvil is replaced by another gripping cam mechanically coupled to the first cam to rotate therewith.
