Abstract
766,307. Fuel-injection engines. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. March 22, 1955 [March 22, 1954], No. 8372/55. Class 7 (3). In an-injection engine with a turbulence chamber disposed eccentrically in the piston crown, liquid fuel being injected by an eccentrically disposed and inclined jet nozzle, the side of the chamber which is remote from the cylinder axis extends as an inclined surface upwardly from the bottom of the chamber to the peripheral edge of the piston, a liquid jet being injected in the direction of the air flow over the inclined surface when an eddy motion is created whereby the fuel is distributed as a film or layer over the surface. As shown in Fig. 2 the fuel stream 25 is diffused while the stream 26 is relatively dense. In Fig. 4 the fuel is sprayed in three streams 25a towards the wall 17. In Fig. 5 the wall 17 is slightly concave. The fuel is sprayed in such a way that a part 27a preferably the greater part impinges on the wall 17 directly with the fuel in the liquid state while the remainder 27b is distributed over the air space of the chamber. A simple pin nozzle giving a funnel shaped jet can be used. In Figs. 1 and 2 the chamber 16 can be produced by a milling tool as indicated at 23 and advantageously by pivoting the tool and piston in relation to one another about a point A in the piston crown. The cylinder 10 is one of a series. The inlet and exhaust valves are located in the water cooled cylinder head 12. One of the valves is seen in Fig. 1 and marked 13. The fuel may be supplied fanwise in one or more streams or may be injected in several jets.
