Abstract

763,091. Propelling ships. SAUNDERSROE (ANGLESEY), Ltd. April 27, 1955 [Jan. 28, 1954], No. 2659/54. Class 114. In a ship propulsion system including a main engine driving a propeller through a main clutch, an auxiliary engine drives an electric generator which serves normally to supply electric power for lighting and other auxiliary purposes but which is connectible to an electric motor which drives the propeller at slow speed through a mechanical transmission having means responsive to speed and/or torque to interrupt the transmission if either or both are excessive. The main engine 1 drives the propeller 2 through a main clutch 3, clutch output shaft 5 and transfer gear box 4, the shaft 5 being extended through the gear box 4 to a hand-controlled clutch 18 adapted to connect the shaft with a worm wheel 15 loosely mounted thereon. A worm 14 driving the worm wheel 15 is itself driven through a reduction gear 12 and hydraulic clutch 11 by a reversible motor 8 which draws current from an auxiliary generator 27 driven by an auxiliary engine 28. The clutch 11 prevents damage from overloading. The manually operated clutches 3 and 18 may be interlocked so that both cannot be in engagement at the same time. The clutch 18 comprises an annulus rigid with the worm wheel 15 and embraced by side plates non-rotatably secured to an extension of the shaft 5 and moved into engagement with the annulus by a hand lever.
