Abstract

497,432. Driving - arrangements for screw propellers. WHITEHEAD TORPEDO CO., Ltd., and JONES, L. June 21, 1937, No. 17292. [Class 114] [Also in Group XXI] Torpedoes, particularly those intended to be dropped from aircraft into the sea, have a freewheel device incorporated in the drive between the engine or motor and the propeller or propellers. In the construction shown, a boss 1 is splined to the driving shaft 2 and is formed with lugs 8 carrying spring-controlled pivoted pawls 9. These pawls are adapted to engage with teeth 10 formed on the inner surface of the propeller boss 4. By this arrangement, the propellers do not tend to transmit any driving force to the shaft when the torpedo enters the water. In a modification, the teeth 10 are formed on or carried by an inner boss riveted to the boss 4, and the pawls are mounted on a two-part boss keyed to the driving shaft, the parts of the boss being interconnected by distance bolts which carry the pawls.
