Abstract

217,395. Parietti, G. D. P., (known as Parietti, G. B.). May 9, 1923. Driving arrangements for screw propellers; propelling and steering by screw propellers; propeller shafts, arrangement of.-Motor or hand driving gear installed on the floor of a boat actuates a transverse shaft which is telescopically connected with transmission gear on the gunwales, the screw shaft being suspended over the side of the boat. The motor and transverse shaft may be mounted on a vertically adjustable bedplate. The motor a is supported on a bedplate b preferably adjustable for height by studs s, and its shaft carries flywheel e engaged by a roller d on a transverse shaft c. The shaft may be supported eccentrically in its bearings and have springs which hold the roller up against the disc, or the flywheel may be slidably spring-controlled. The roller is movable axially for effecting speed variation. The shaft c is universally jointed to telescopic connecting shafts h which are universally jointed to the shafts of the gear-boxes r, which are clamped to the gunwales. Power is transmitted through gears m, n to the propeller, the shaft of which may be telescopic as at o. Friction clutches q may be provided in the transmission for steering purposes. The brackets r may be extensible. The engine may be set with its shaft athwartships and provided with telescopic extensions to the gear-boxes or to chain gears thereon. When auxiliary hand actuation of the shaft is contemplated, the necessary clutches are provided.
