Abstract

749,825. Direct injection engines. KRUG, H. Dec. 2, 1952 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 30512/52. Class 7(3) In a fuel injection engine having a combustion chamber 2 in the piston 1 in the shape of a body of rotation, the fuel is injected to form a film on the wall of the chamber, from which it is removed by the air rotating therein. The injection nozzle 4 provides three short jets of fuel 6...8 which produce thin fuel films 14...16 on the wall of the combustion chamber 2 which may be a sphere or an elliptroid of revolution and has a short cylindrical outlet passage 3. The air in the cylinder, and hence in the combustion chamber, is caused to rotate by the air inlet passage which is spirally curved adjacent the inlet valve, the stroke of which valve may be increased beyond that necessary for full opening of the valve port. The cross section of the passage 3 is about 65 per cent of the largest cross section of the chamber 2 and its length is 15 to 30 per cent of the radius of the chamber, the injection orifices being arranged at about 2 to 4 mm. below the outer edge of the passage 3 at the top dead centre. The piston head, cylinder head, and inlet and exhaust valves may be formed with curved surfaces, the piston head having a different radius of curvature from that of the cylinder head.
