Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In an engine having means for imparting to the air charge entering the cylinder a rotary motion of different velocities, the fuel is injected through several tangential nozzles d arranged in the side walls of the cylinder, and the whirling velocity of the air is adjusted to a value such that during the period of fuel injection the air rotates through an angle corresponding to the distance between two adjacent nozzles. The rotary motion may be imparted to the air by arranging the inlet valve b eccentrically to the cylinder, and providing a semicircular shield c carried by the valve, the angular position of which relative to the cylinder may be adjusted. In an alternative construction is utilized a central valve which carries spiral vanes on the upper face, and which may serve both for exhaust and inlet, the whirling velocity of the air being controlled either by a valve on the air inlet pipe or by interchanging the valve for one with vanes of different curvature.
