Abstract
247,788. White, W. C. April 24, 1925. Couplings, disconnectible; stuffing-box joints; ball-andsocket joints.-A train pipe comprises a pair of meeting tubular members 10, 11, a telescoping pipe section 25 and a sleeve 27 therefore in each tubular member, a packing 30 located between each pipe section 25 and tubular member 10, 11 and adapted to be compressed by fluid pressure within the pipe sections, disconnectible coupling heads 12, 12 at the meeting ends of the said tubular members, and a ball-and-socket joint at each end of the coupling provided with a packing 40 adapted to be compressed by the fluid pressure. The heads 12, 12 are provided with diametral radial lugs 15 - - 18, the lugs 15, 18 being threaded with coupling studs 19 adapted to engage slots 23 in the lugs 16, 17 when one head is rotated axially with respect to the other. Adjustment of the studs 19 cause shoulders 22 thereon to seat in sockets 24, surrounding the inner end of said slots 23, to lock the head in position. The heads are provided with projecting gaskets 14, while operating- levers 21 on the studs 19 prevent rotation thereof by engagement with the tubular members 10, 11. The packing 30 between the pipe sections 25 and the tubular members 10, 11 is positioned by a spacer ring 29 subjected to fluid pressure through peripheral passages on a head 26 at the end of the tubular member. Each ball-and-socket joint comprises a body portion 33 and a cap section 34, slidably mounted on a nipple 36 provided on the body portion, adapted to be received by a socket 41, 44. Between the sections 33, 34 is provided the packing 40, operated by fluidpressure through the section 34. The coupling may include only one of the tubular members 10, 11.
