Abstract

305,478. Muller, J. Feb. 4, 1928, [Convention date]. Stuffing-box joints. - Fluid-tightness between two pipes 1, 2, Fig. 1, is secured by elastic packing rings 9, 10 which are mounted on the adjacent ends of the tubes and are compressed against an intermediate ring member 3 by an outer twopart housing 13, 14. The external periphery of the rings 9, 10 and the abutting surfaces of the ring 4 are preferably of biconvex and concave configuration respectively, while the said packing rings are each wholly or partly covered by a heatinsulating elastic sheath 11, 12, which is provided with grooves 24 adapted to be engaged by ribs 23 on the housing so as to maintain the parts of the joints in position. Additional securing means such as cords 25 may be employed, while a continuous pressure may be ensured on the parts of the joint by coiled springs 32 positioned as shown in Fig. 3. Grooves 30, Fig. 2, may be provided in the ring member 3 to receive and retain the ends 31 of the sheaths 11, 12. The packing rings 9, 10 may comprise fluid-tight sheaths containing fluid injected under pressure.
