Abstract
289,902. Harris, H. P., and Spencer, R. W. Dec. 3, 1926. Ball-and-socket joints; sleeve joints.-In joints for pipes a, b of the kind described in Specifications 235,652, 287,440, and 287,594, and in which the inner spacing member e of the joint is provided with packing f adapted to abut against the spherical-surfaced pipe ends c, d, screwthreaded means are employed for clamping the parts of the outer securing member together. For example, the outer securing member may comprise annular members j, Figs. 4, 14, made in segments and exteriorly threaded to engage an interiorly threaded ring m, or it may comprise a pair of annular members p, Figs. 8, 15, interiorly threaded to engage the threaded periphery of an annular protrusion q on the inner member e. Alternatively, the annular members r, Fig. 9, on the pipe ends engage with one another, while in a further modification, Fig. 11, an inner ring s, formed in halves and adapted to engage both pipe ends, is engaged by an outer ring t, the two rings having coacting tapered threads. The packing g may be spring-pressed by means of a spring h.
