Abstract

736,814. Pipe couplings;pipe stoppers. RINGFEDER GES. Dec. 3, 1952, No. 30701/52. Classes 99 (1) and 99 (2). A quick-release pipe connection or pipe-end closure comprises an inner ring 1, Fig. 1, and outer rings 5, 6 made of spring steel, which may be anti-corrosive, and provided with inclined contacting faces to form a closed ring surrounding pipes 4 or a closure 58, Fig. 10, for a pipe end 62, such that axial loading of the rings 1, 5, 6 or similar rings 59, 60 will cause radial expansion of the outer rings and radial contraction of the inner rings to form a seal between the pipes 4 and an outer member such as a locking-ring 9 or between the closure 58 and the pipe end 62, and on release of the loading the rings will automatically return to their pre-stressed positions without deformation. The ring 1 has a central groove 2 to receive a split-ring 3 to ensure accurate positioning of the pipes, and the rings 5, 6 have left and right hand threads engaging threads on the ring 9. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, there are two inner rings 12 and two outer rings 19, 22, the ring 22 being screw-threaded for a locking nut 20, and a split-ring 15 and a rubber ring 18 being mounted in grooves. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the nut 20 and ring 19 are integral, in Fig. 6 (not shown), the inner and outer rings are applied to a spigot- and-socket joint, and in Fig. 7 the pipe ends are bevelled and a locking-sleeve 43 has a deep groove 47 to accommodate a split-ring 46, two sets of sealing-rings 40, 41 being provided, either of which sets can be released to free one of the pipes. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), three pairs of sealing-rings in stepped formation and of different tapers are provided for each pipe.
