Abstract
794,580. Pipe couplings. KIRK & CO. (TUBES), Ltd., and BANFILL, H. J. June 18, 1956 [June 17, 1955], No. 17531/55. Class 99(1). Semi-cylindrical iron or steel housings 1 are bolted together or hinged at one side so as to bridge the ends of pipes 5, and a bush 4 made of rubber, plastic, fibre &c. is fitted on the end of each pipe, the housings 1 being clamped together to deform the bushes and provide seals between the pipe ends and between the housing and the outer faces of the pipes. The inner face of each part of the housing and the outer circumferential face of each of the bushes is formed with ribs and grooves which partly correspond. A groove 6 on each bush is engaged by ribs 7 on the housing and a rib 8 on each bush engages for a greater part of its axial length in grooves 9 on the housing. The meeting ends of the bushes are compressed by a central circumferential rib 10 in the housing which may be of larger diameter than ribs 7, which deforms the ends of the bushes and effects the seal. Each part of the housing is formed with an internal groove 11 for receiving a circumferential flange 12 on the outer end of the bush so as to locate it in the correct position in the housing. Each bush 4 has a plain internal surface with an inwardly directed flange 4a, against which the pipe end rests when the bush is fixed in position.
