Abstract

824,986. Pipe end fittings. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. March 18, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 8888/57. Class 99(1). In a pipe end fitting, of the type in which a cylindrical sealing sleeve 14 for reception of the pipe terminates in a radial flange 14b secured to a body 13 with the bore of the pipe aligned with an aperture 13a in the body through which fluid passes, a cylindrical flanged ferrule 15 is secured integrally to the pipe end 10, e.g. by brazing or welding, and is received within the sealing sleeve, rubber sealing rings 16 being provided between the ferrule and the sealing sleeve. A retaining sleeve 17 embraces the sealing sleeve and has at one end an inturned flange 17c between which and the end of the sealing sleeve the flange 15c on the ferrule is trapped, and at the other end a radial flange 17b bearing against the flange 14b on the sealing sleeve, both flanges being secured together and to the body 13 by setscrews 12. As shown, a rubber sealing ring 18 is provided between the flange 11 of the sealing ring and the body 13 and is housed in a circumferential groove 13b one side of which is provided by a retaining tube 19. Clearances between the flange 15c and 17c on one side and the end of sleeve 14 on the other side and between flange 14c and the end of ferrule 15 provide for thermal expansion, whilst a radial clearance 19a between the retaining and sealing sleeves acts to insulate the rubber sealing rings 16 from high temperatures externally of the fitting.
