Abstract

801,631. Pipe joints. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd. Jan. 4, 1957 [Jan. 5, 1956], No. 463/56. Class 99(1). A collar 3 secured to a pipe 1 projects beyond the pipe end, a collar 7 is secured on a pipe 2 so as to leave a short portion of the pipe end projecting back, a sleeve 11 fits around the collars, and a rubber &c. sealing ring 13 is compressed in an annular gap between the collars, the sleeve and the projecting pipe end. The collars 3, 7 and the pipe ends 1, 2 are made of stainless steel and are brazed to each other by the insertion of pellets of brazing material in recesses 6, 8 in the collars respectively which melt and flow around the inner face of collars and pipes when heated, e.g., by electrical induction. The collar 3 has a central external screw thread 4 and a hexagonal part 5. The parts are clamped together by a nut 9 integral with the sleeve 11 and engaging the screw thread 4. The collars are secured to the pipe ends so that when the end of the pipe 2 is inserted into collar 3 and contacts the end of pipe 1 a small gap is left at 12 and the sealing ring 13 is compressed in an axial direction when the joint is assembled. If low pressure fluids are conveyed, the fastenings may be made less mechanically strong and the sleeve may be a separate part or alternatively secured to either collar. For this modification the projection of pipe 2 from collar 7 may be reduced so that the collars abut on assembly without the presence of a sealing ring, and in this case the ring could be of square cross-section, the radial depth being approximately that of each of the collars.
