Abstract

854,629. Pipe joints. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. April 6, 1959 [April 17, 1958], No. 12290/58. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXV] In a coupling for pipes 1, 2 having radial flanges 5, 6 adjacent the ends thereof and forced axially into abutment by a clamp 18, the flange 6 has a radially extending annular recess 7 which forms with the flange 5 an annular gap 11 housing a sealing ring 12, that recess extending to the interior of the flange 6 and being such as to provide thereon a peripheral, axially extending, annular abutment 8 which contacts the flange 5 to limit axial movement of the flanges towards each other under the action of the clamp, the flange 5 being provided with a locating portion 9 to receive and locate the abutment 8 to assist axial alignment of the pipes. As shown, the flanges 5, 6 are chamfered at 14 to assist the separation thereof, and an inspection hole 15 in the abutment 8 permits testing for the presence of the sealing ring. The flange 5 may have annular abutment 13.
