Abstract
638,283. Pipe joints. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Feb. 10, 1947, No. 3890. [Class 99(i)] A joint for connecting a gas - carrying pipe to another member, e.g., in gas-turbine power plants, permitting relative angular movement of the parts, comprises two part-spherical thrust surfaces associated one with each of the two members and centred about a point. spaced from the surfaces axially of the pipe, the surfaces having sealing engagement provided by the pressure in the pipe, and additional sealing means being provided between the pipe and the member, the additional sealing means or the thrust surfaces being so arranged with respect to the pipe or member that they are relatively movable with respect thereto transversely of the pipe axis. In Fig. 1, a joint ring 13 mounted in a sleeve 11 welded to a pipe 10 has a part-spherical surface 14 contacting a corresponding surface 23 on a sleeve 22 connected to the other member 18 of the joint, the spherical surfaces having their centres at 15. The additional sealing means comprises split rings 17 movable radially in slots 16. In Fig. 2, the additional seal comprises a spherical surface 25 which is provided on a sleeve 11 fixed to the pipe 10, is centred about a point 27 on the pipe axis and co-acts with a cylindrical surface on a member 20 fixed to the other coupling member. The ring 13 is mounted on the sleeve 11 so as to be capable of radial movement. In Fig. 3, a joint ring 34 made of bonded asbestos or graphite is mounted for radial movement on a stepped sleeve 32 fixed to a pipe 30 and is made in two parts so as to be removable without disconnecting the joint. Part-spherical surfaces centred at 35 are provided on the sleeve 32 and the ring 34. An outer member 36 connected by studs 38 to the second member 31 of the joint has a tapered surface 37 engaging the ring 34, removal of the ring being possible on loosening the studs. A split ring 41 provides the additional seal. A flanged member 43 by engaging ring 34 separates it from the member 36.
