649,090. Pipe joints. ROHR, F. H. Nov. 19, 1946, No. 34229. Convention date, Aug. 17, 1946. [Class 99(i)] A flexible joint comprises ball and socket members 6, 10, Fig. 1, which together with a removable annular retainer 16 form an open-mouthed, bell-shaped structure such that cooling outside air can come between the concave inner surface and one of the pipes. As shown, a pipe 5 connected to the exhaust port of a flexiblymounted engine is bent back on itself to form the member 6, and the member 10 is formed by the end of a conduit section 11 sliding within a section 18 welded to a section 19 similar to the member 6 and co-operating with members 21, 25 to form a second flexible joint. For reinforcement and better sliding contact, recesses 18a and a flared end 20 are provided on the section 18. In a modification, a joint member 36a, Fig. 4, has a recess 37a which seats an anti-friction, cast-iron ring 38a, and a second joint member 50 has a similar recess housing a complementary ring 33a, radial rims of the ring-holding parts being secured by a clamp. Two similar flexible joints may be connected by a sliding joint.
