Abstract

318,163. Reynolds, D. H. B. May 26, 1928. Joint-making packing.-In a joint for pipes g, g, Fig. 3, wherein fluid-tightness is secured by a rubber &c. packing-ring a, Fig. 1, which'is enclosed within a sheathing k, pressure is applied to the margins of the flanges c, c of the packing ring nearest the pipe ends through the web thereof to maintain said margins in sealing condition by that part of the sheath which is in alignment with said margins. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, adapted to withstand high external pressures the side walls d of the packing ring have the external surfaces thereof angularly arranged; alternatively, external triangular flanges e, Fig. 6, are provided on the said side walls d as shown. Other slightly modified forms of packing rings are also described. In each case the minimum internal diameter of the flanges c is made less than the diameter of the pipes to be connected, so that a small amount of initial strain is introduced when the packing ring is positioned, while the flanges c are provided with perforations h or slots j for transmission of the internal fluid pressure to the back thereof. The sheath is adapted to engage grooves in or projections on the pipe ends so as to prevent longitudinal displacement of the pipes, and is preferably of flexible material and of a curvature, different to that of the packing ring, Fig. 13, so that, when distorted during assembly an even pressure is imparted to the said ring.
