Abstract

348,719. Combustion chambers; valves. HAGEMEISTER, J. and JANAIR, Ltd., Shenstone Station, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. Feb. 21, 1930, No. 5825. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi).] Whirling of the charge in a hemispherical combustion chamber (seen in inverted plan) is produced by arranging valve seats at the base of pockets 8, 17, the centre lines of which (shown dotted) are tangential to a cylinder 14 co-axial with the combustion chamber; the inlet and exhaust of fluid thus tends to take place at the sides 44, 45 of the valves and the charge is whirled in the direction of the arrow 21. In a modification the centre lines of both the valves and the pockets are tangential to the cylinder. The piston may have a concave head.
