Abstract

740,997. Centrifugal separators. CARTER, W. R. April 20, 1953 [Aug. 9, 1952], No. 10841/53. Class 23. Particles are separated from. gas in apparatus comprising a power-driven rotor mounted in a housing having an inlet adjacent the upper end of the rotor, the lower part of the rotor tapering towards the lower end, the peripheral wall of the rotor having apertures permitting the free passage of particles, and a clean gas withdrawal protruding into the upper end of the rotor. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the gas passes from the inlet 37 to an inlet chamber 14 at the top of the housing. The gas withdrawal tube 21 rotates with the rotor 23 and passes through the inlet chamber to discharge into an outlet chamber 15a having a tangential outlet 38. The rotor has a frusto-conical part 23a and is closed at its upper and lower ends by plates 24, 25. A disc 27 on the rotor shaft facilitates removal of the separated particles from the casing by an air lock 33 having a rotary member 34. Gas under pressure may be supplied to the inlet or a suction may be applied to the outlet. If the gas is to be supplied at pressure, the outlet chamber may be dispensed with and the end of the withdrawal tube supplied with a grill. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), both the housing and the rotor are frusto-conical, the space between them diverging with distance from the inlet end of the housing. In the modification shown in Fig. 5 the gas is supplied by a tangential inlet 64 and the rotor turns about the gas withdrawal tube 52. The gas outlet chamber is formed by a removable cap 51 having a tangential outlet 65. Two or more rotors may be contained in a single housing having one or more inlets.
