Abstract

720,391. Centrifugal separators. CARTER, W. R. March 5, 1951, No. 5342/51. Class 23. The rotor of a centrifugal separator comprises a shaft 16 having discs A, B and an air discharge tube 15 which has perforate and imperforate discs C, D respectively. The disc A is imperforate whilst the equally spaced discs B are provided with circumferentially or radially extending slots or spaced circular holes. The rotor housing 11 has a helical guide 27 for the solid particles and carries cap casings 13, 22 in which the rotor is journalled. Air is admitted through an inlet 14 and tangentially discharged through a blower casing 19 having a valvecontrolled discharge duct 19a therein, the solids being discharged to a container 29 at least two of the discs B may have imperforate cover plates 32 and a multi-stage blower may be used. In a modification, the air is first fed to a cyclone dust separator and then fed upwardly through a separator having an inverted rotor as described above. Solids are tangentially discharged through a duct fixed in the lower part of the separator. In a further modification the rotor comprises a sleeve having a perforated spiral or helical element and an imperforate disc. The air inlet is positioned in the lower cap casing and the solids outlet is disposed in the lower part of the rotor housing. The air is drawn upwardly through the separator andis discharged through the sleeve and the upper cap casing. In a final modification, three separators are connected in series so that the air passes downwardly through the first separator and upwardly through the others. The first two separators each have a speed control unit, a motor and a rotor comprised of perforated discs whilst the third separator is as disclosed in the first modification.
