Abstract

520,322. Centrifugal dust separators. OSGOOD, A. B. Feb. 16, 1939, No. 5209. [Class 23] A centrifugal dust separator has a cylindrical portion 5 and a depending conical portion 9 bolted together by means of flanges 11, 12; an inner tubular shell 14 forms the clean gas outlet and has shallow tangential passages 14b which permit the outward passage of dust drawn from the tube 14 by the suction exerted by the whirl- .ing gas between the tube 14 and the wall 5. The side wall of a cup shaped bonnet 16 forms a continuation of the tube 14 and is adjustably secured to it by means of flanges 15, 18 and bolts 19. The bonnet 16 carries the discharge spout 17. The lower part of the tube 14 consists of a detachable truncated cone 14a, and the body of the tube 14 consists of overlapping cylindrical segments with spacing blocks 14c riveted between them to form the passages 14b. A conical baffle 21 is fixed in the lower part of the casing; it is supported from a crossbar 23 so that only a small gap is left between its periphery and the wall 9. To prevent separated dust from accumulating, chains 26 are attached to the ends of a vane 25 which is rotated by the current of gas. The dust laden gas enters by the tangential inlet 6 and whirls round in the casings 5, 9. The separated dust drops outside the edge of the baffle 21 and the gas rotates the vane 25. The gas rises up through the pipe 14 and any dust particles in it are pasesd through the passages 14b to rejoin the entering stream, while the clean gas passes to the outlet 17. The crosssectional area of the outlet 17 is preferably greater than that of the inlet 6.
