Abstract

739,302. Magnetrons. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. July 22, 1953 [July 25, 1952], No. 20363/53. Class 39 (1). In a magnetron with number of active resonant anode segments facing one part of the cathode and a neutral anode segment connected to a point of zero high frequency voltage facing circumferentially another part of the cathode, the ratio of cathode radius to anode radius is higher for the region of the space charge chamber defined by the active segments and lower for the region defined by the neutral segment. Space charge bunches are debunched in the neutral region and formed afresh in the active region. In a magnetron, Fig. 1, with anode segments 5 connected to a one and a half turn spiral loop 4 terminating a transmission line 2, 3 as described in Specification 655,041, and with a neutral anode segment 6 as described in Specification 657,487, the cathode comprises a non-emissive portion 8 of greater radius facing the anode segments 5, and an emissive portion 7 of lower radius facing the neutral electrode 6. Adjacent anode segments are connected to different turns of the loop. The cathode portions 7 and 8 need not be separate as shown, and may comprise a single member of oval or eggshaped cross-section having an internal heater, Fig. 3 (not shown). The cathode may comprise two contacting cylinders of larger and smaller diameters. In another modification, Fig. 4, the cathode 26 has a circular cross-section, but the neutral electrode 28 has a portion 29 of relatively large radius. The portion 29 may be a plane surface.
