Abstract

736,944. Travelling-wave tubes; magnetrons. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Nov. 26, 1953 [Nov. 29, 1952], No. 32914/53. Class 39 (1). A travelling-wave tube having a circular interaction space and operating with crossed electric and magnetic fields consists of two coaxial rigid units, one of which may be rotated relative to the other to provide access to tube components for adjustment during assembly. One unit consists of the envelope 8, the delay line 1, an electron focusing electrode 6, a collector electrode 7 and coupling connections 12, 13. The other unit rotatably mounted on the pin 22 comprises the negative electrode 3, the cathode 5 and a screen 9 for preventing coupling between the ends of the delay line. Deformable tongues 27 at the ends of the delay are adjusted for matching, access being had to them by rotation of the central unit. After adjustment the units are locked in position. The pin 22 is mounted on a bottom plate of the fixed unit. The delay line is an inter-digital line and the matching tongues 27 are secured to end fingers which are longer than all the others. The line is made up of two interdigitating elements which are mounted on the shoulders of recesses formed in the envelope wall. The coupling connections 12, 13 may be tangential to the envelope. In a modification the rotatable unit comprises a central post and two end plates and is rotatable upon an end wall of the envelope. The pin 22 may contain a cooling duct communicating with a cooling duct in an end wall of the envelope. The pin 22 may be constituted by a magnet, the envelope being toroidal and having end walls which constitute polepieces for the magnet. The negative electrode may surround the delay line, forming part of a cup which is rotatably mounted on the delay line unit. A water jacket surrounding the envelope is formed by a metal band drawn tight by screws and rendered watertight by an asbestos gasket impregnated with tar, colloidal graphite or varnish. The tube may be an amplifier or an oscillator of the backward-wave type. Specifications 663,728 and 699,893 are referred to.
