Abstract
671,319. Magnetrons. M-0 VALVE CO., Ltd., and WILLSHAW, W. E. Aug. 6, 1947 [May 17, 1946], No. 14985/46. Class 39 (i). A cavity magnetron amplifier or frequency multiplier comprises an indirectly - heated primary cathode 15 coated with electronemissive material and an electrode 11 completing a cylindrical surface with the primary cathode 15 and treated to render it everywhere substantially non-secondarily emissive, for example by coating it with titanium dioxide. The primary cathode 15 is carried by end-plates 17, each supported by a stout metal lead 18, and the electrode 11 is carried by circular end-plates 12, each supported by a stout metal lead 13. The metal anode block 1 is pierced by two radial cavities 9, each of a quarter-wavelength and containing between them a wedge-shaped finger 10 constituting a resonant input circuit via the lead 21. An output lead 23 contained in a metal-to-glass thimble seal 24 terminates in a loop lying within one of the resonant cavities 5. The cavities 5 and channels 6 extend in a semicircle, and terminate with two semi-circular holes 7 and channels 8 of half the width of the channels 6. The metal tongues formed between adjacent channels 6 are connected together, at each face of the block 1, by metal straps 25, 26 set into circular grooves in the tongues, the strap 25 at one face of the block connecting the first, third, fifth, &c. tongues and the strap 26 the remaining tongues, and vice-versa for the straps at the other face of the block. A metal strip 20 set into the block 1 situated on the side of the primarycathode 15 away from that towards which electrons emitted from the cathode move prevents electrons repassing the finger 10. Potential-equalizing plates 29 are positioned in recesses in each face of the block 1 and the block is sealed-off by end-plates 27 attached by gold-washer seals. In modifications the magnetron may comprise interlacing resonant fingers and may have planar electrodes. Speci. fications 574,453, 578,655 and 587,775 are referred to
