Abstract

730,956. Fastenings. REDWING, Ltd. June 26, 1952 [July 16, 1951], No. 16850/51. Class 44. In a magnetic door latch having a magnet element and a keeper element and wherein one element is mounted on the door and the other element on the door jamb, at least one element forms part of a spring unit which comprises a U-shaped housing slidably located in a recess in the door or jamb and having said one element mounted on its outer end, a locking piece mounted in the housing having side portions projecting outwardly between the arms of the housing and engaging a fixed part on the door or jamb carrying the housing and a spring disposed between the locking piece and the inner end of the housing. As shown in the drawings a bar magnet 3 is secured to a cabinet wall 2. The keeper 5 is welded to arms 6 of the housing 7 which passes through an aperture 13, in a catchplate 8 secured to the cabinet door 1 and into a recess 10 in the door. The side portions 14, Fig. 3, of the locking piece 9, Figs. 1 or 2, engage the plate 8 and the spring 12 is positioned between the piece 9 and the base of the housing 7. A pad 11 of rubber is interposed between the arms 6 and the plate 8. Should the door be slammed, rebound of the door will cause the spring 12 to compress as shown in Fig. 2 with the keeper still retained by the magnet. The spring then expands to close the door as shown in Fig. 1. A horse shoe magnet may be used in lieu of the bar magnet, and the magnet may also be resiliently mounted.
