Abstract

985,802. Latches. W. J. CAMPBELL. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 27, 1962; Feb. 21, 1963], Nos. 48618/62 and 6935/63. Heading E2A. A door latch comprises a casing, a bolt 3 slidably mounted within the casing and having one end 3A projecting from the casing, and outside the casing, a spring 4 attached at one end to the projecting end 3A of the bolt 3 and attached at its other end to the casing so as to urge the bolt depressably to its projecting position. As shown, the bolt is operated by handles 5 through a follower 7. The spring 4, of substantially V-shape, is attached at one end 4B to a pin 10 bridging a gap at the end 3A of the bolt, the other end 4C of the spring being slidably engaged between inner and outer flanges 11, 12 on the casing with a free end portion 4B engaging in a slot formed between flange 12 and a lip 12A on the latter. The casing is formed by front and rear plates 13, 14 interconnected by co-operating tongues 16, 17 and flanges 12, 14A which latter are secured to the door edge by screws passing through them. The plate 13 is also secured by screws at position 13A. The follower 7 includes a collar (not shown) which passes through the plate 13 into a hole in the door for the handle spindle 6. Spaced overlapping flanges 24, 25 on the plates 13, 14 provide slideways for the bolt 3. The bolt may be wider than the spring and the latch may include a locking catch of known form. The handles may be replaced by a finger and thumb action grip. In another arrangement, Fig. 4 and 5 (not shown), the leaf spring 4 is replaced by a coiled wire tension spring, extensions of which engage holes in lugs at the projecting end of the bolt. A keeper for the bolt consists of a substantially L-shaped plate screwed into a corresponding recess in the door jamb.
