A locking latch adapted to be unlatched by pressure applied in a direction at right angles to the plane in which the latch head moves, includes a warddisplaceable by direct action of a key thereon, a spring- loaded detent means for locating the ward in the locked and unlocked positions, a face presented by the ward to engage the latch bolt and prevent unlatching movement of the latch head when in the locked position, and a mounting carried by the ward for housing spring means adapted to bear on the latch bolt so as to urge it towards the latched position thereof. In the arrangement shown, a latch bolt 12 is pivoted on a hollow pillar integral with the latch casing and is moved to unlatched position by a spring loaded push button-operated actuator 13 housed in a guide 16a forming part of the back plate of the latch, the actuator engaging a cam surface 12a at the lower end of the latch bolt. A ward 17, guided for longitudinal movement between faces 11h and 11j of a recess 11g in the casing 11 is formed with key-abutting surfaces 17l and 17u and with a projection 17p having a bore therein for a pair of mutually spring-loaded plungers 20 and 21. The plunger 20 bears against the latch bolt 12 and the plunger 21 engages one or the other of a pair of grooves 11g and 11r formed in a projection 11p of the casing 11. A projection 17g on the projection 17p serves to guide the ward against a projection 11d which guides the actuator 13 and also prevents operation of the actuator when the ward is in the locking position shown.
