A barrel lock of the kind having transversely sliding locking plates in a cylinder having a bore of substantially rectangular section, has at the end of the cylinder opposite the key a transverse groove perpendicular to the longer sides of the cross section of the bore, and the bore has guide grooves in the two opposite shorter sides for the key. A transmission member engages in the transverse groove and catuates a bolt or follower. The lock comprises a cylinder 1, Figs. 1 and 2, with plate tumblers 2 sliding transversely against the action of springs 3. The cylinder has an axial bore of substantially rectangular cross section, and its outer wall has as many grooves 5 as there are tumbler plates. The plates are actuated by a key 14, Fig. 6, which engages projections 13 in the sides of central openings in the plates, the key sliding in grooves 16, Fig. 3. The end of the cylinder opposite the key entry is formed with a deep transverse slot 17. Fig. 3, and with an annular groove 18, Figs. 1, 4. Where the cylinder is arranged to operate a bolt 19, as in Fig. 4, by means of a transmission member 20, the latter has a T-shaped end which enters the slot 17 and is retained by a circlip 21 sprung into the groove 18. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, a member 22, engaged in the slot 17, drives a follower 23 which is rotatably mounted between end plates 25, 26. A similar arrangement may be used with two barrel locks mounted back to back, Fig. 7, the transmission member comprising two shaped parts 39, 40, connected together by a rod 41 which allows them to turn relatively to one another, and slidable axially as a whole in the shaped opening in the follower 23 on entry of the key in one or other of the locks, thus coupling the look in use to the follower.
