UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM D. RICHARDS, OE SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK E. BEST, INC., OF SEATTLE, WASHING-TON, A CORPORATION OF WASHINGTON.
DRAWER LOOK.
Application filed August 14, 1924. Serial No. 732,003.
My invention relates to improvements in locks of the form commonly known as drawer locks and is in the nature of an 1 mprovement on the lock disclosed in the pr or application of Frank Ellison Best, Serial No. 650,635. Filed July 10, 1924.
In pin tumbler locks of this nature wherein a removable lock core is provided for operating abolt a throw pin on the end of the lock core operates the locking bolt and also normally serves as a stop to prevent the locking bolt from dropping out of a. houslng in which it is operatively disposed. When the lock core is removed as may frequently happen in locks of this type the bolt if in a vertical position will be free to drop out unless it is otherwise restrained. It 18 an object of this invention to provide in a lock of this nature positive stop means independent of the lock core for limiting the movement of the bolt in both directions.
A more specific object is to provide 'a lock of this nature embodying a fiat bolt having a notch in one edge and a backing plate for said bolt having a lug arranged to protrude into said notch and form a stop against which the opposite ends of said notch may strike.
Further objects will be apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an isometric view of a lock constructed in accordance with my invention, showing a. portion of the lock housing in section, substantially on broken line 1-1 of Fig. 2. v
Figure 2 is a sectional View of the same substantially on broken line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, throughout which like reference numerals designate like parts, 5 designates a backing plate, to one side of which is secured a cylinder 6 wherein a removable lock core 7, shown partially dotted in Fig. 2 may be disposed and provided on the opposite side with a bolt guide or housing member 8 of channel shaped cross section wherein a flat bolt member 10 may be reciprocably disposed. The bolt member 10 is provided with a J shaped slot 11 into which a throw pin 12 on the end of the lock core is arranged to project for moving the bolt, the J shaped slot 11 permitting a complete turn of the key plug of the lock in moving the bolt from one extreme position to another; all as more clearly set forth in the prior application hereinbefore referred to. The lock core 7 is releasably locked within the cylinder 6 by a key operated locking gate 9.
In locks of this type the throw pin 12 may be made to serve as a stop but I find that it is desirable to provide positive stop means independent of the pin 12 for limiting the movement of the bolt 10. To meet this requirement I provide in the edge of the bolt 10 a notch 13 affording at its opposite ends two shoulders 1 1 and and further provide on the backing plate 5 a lug 16 that extends into the notch 13 and is arranged to be engaged by the shoulders 14 and 15 to limit the movement of the bolt in both directions.
The stop formed by the notch 13 and lug 16 relieves the throw pin 12 of the necessity of functioning as a stop and makes it im possible for the bolt 10 to drop out or get out of place when the lock core 7 is removed from the core housing or cylinder 6.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings clearly disclose a preferred embodiment of my invention but it will be understood that this disclosure is merely illustrative and that such changes in the same may be made as are within the scope and spirit of the following claim.
I claim:
In a lock of the class described a backing plate, a bolt housing secured to one side of said backing plate, a bolt reciprocable in said bolt housing and arranged to be projected from either end thereof, said bolt having a notch in one edge, a lock housing secured to the other side of said backing plate, a lock core removably disposed in said housing, said lock core having means for engaging with and operating said bolt, and an integral lug on said backing plate arranged to project into the notch in the edge of said bolt to limit the movement of said bolt in both directions.
WVILLIAM D. RICHARDS.
