Abstract

729,060. Friction clutches. TAYLOR, L. Oct. 12, 1953 [Oct: 8, 1952], No. 25174/52. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a multi-disc clutch between sleeves 11, 16, operated by pairs of toggle links 19, 20 which are disposed between thrust members 17, 18 rotating with the sleeve 11 and which are controlled by a slidabte bevelled sleeve 21, the thrust member 17 adjacent the discs has a length-adjusting part 17b screwed thereon and locked thereto by a spring-loaded pin 25 slidable in the part 17b and engageable with any one of a number of holes in a locking plate 13 which is splined on the sleeve 11 and which is held against. the part 17b by a turned-down flange 17c on the latter. Movement of the pins 25 is limited by a lateral projection 27 engaged in a recess 26 in the part 17b. The other thrust member 18 is located by a resilient split ring 24 which engages between an annular groove on the sleeve 11 and the internally-tapered end of the member 18 and which may consist of a close-coiled spring with a steel wire core, the annular recess being of slightly larger diameter than the spring. One or more spring discs 30 may be arranged behind or in front of the discs, or one of the members 17, 18 may be in two parts with the spring discs or discs between the parts.
