Abstract

725,907. Internal shoe-drum brakes. NILSSON, O. G. Sept. 2, 1953, No. 24226/53. Class 103 (1). In a brake assembly comprising a main brake and a pilot brake both adapted for expansion on to a common brake drum in which they are housed, the main brake is mounted on a fixed member carried on the shaft about which the brake drum rotates and the pilot brake is carried by a member which rotates directly on the shaft, the main brake being disposed near the inner end of the drum and its carrying member constituting a partition or shield'between the two brakes. A mechanically operated main brake 3 is secured to the brake shield 4, fixedly secured to the shaft 1. The brake lever 8 of the main brake is actuated by a pin 7 mounted on the brake shield 6 of the hydraulically operated pilot brake 5, the brake shoes of the pilot brake are applied against the brake drum 2, the shield 6 rotates together with the wheel, and the pin 7 actuates the brake lever 8 of the main brake. The pilot brake may also be mechanically or electromagnetically operated and the main brake may also be hydraulically operated.
