Abstract

726,594. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING, Ltd. April 20, 1954 [April 22, 1953], No. 11033/53. Class 103 (1). An internal shoe-drum brake may be actuated either hydraulically, by a single ended cylinder 16, the piston 26 of which acts against the web of shoe 10, or mechanically by a cranked lever 34 extending through the back plate 15 and having an arm 32 which extends through a slot 31 in the shoe web. The slot 31 is of such a length that the arm 32 does not interfere with the hydraulic operation of the brake. The cylinder housing 17 is mounted on the back plate 15 so as to float a limited amount sufficient to equalise the thrust of the piston with an equal thrust on the shoe 11. Rubber boots 38 and 39 are provided to prevent entry of dust and water.
