Abstract
717,718. Stuffing-box substitutes. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. April 1, 1953 [April 3, 1952], No. 8589/52. Class 122(5) In a rotary shaft seal comprising a cylindrical ring 1 that sealingly floats on the shaft 2, or in the housing 4, and is radially free but axially constrained in the housing, or on the shaft, the ring is compressed between two axially separated faces and has, close to one end, a d e e p circumferential groove that forms a resilient lip 1a. The ring is preferably internally grooved with a series of parallel grooves or a single or multi-thread helix, and may be made of a material having a greater rate of thermal expansion than the material of the shaft. Positive means may be provided to prevent relative rotation of the ring; 1 and housing 4. According to the Provisional Specification the resilient lip may be formed by a spring on, or a groove in, one of the axially separated faces.
