Abstract

727,099. Wiper rings for shafts. WYSE, H. G. March 31, 1953 [Aug. 14, 1952], No. 8882/53. Class 122 (5). A wiper ring 10 for an axially movable shaft 11 comprises a scraper ring 25 split angularly with respect to its axis and internally coned to form a narrow working edge 29 urged into contact with the shaft by a continuous solid section compression member 28 housed in a groove 27 in the outer periphery of the ring 25 and having a free internal diameter less than that of the bottom of the groove 27. The member 28, which is a sliding fit in the groove 27, is of equilateral polygonal shape and its opposite sides 35 are bowed when it is in the groove. The scraper ring 25 may be of bronze, brass, copper-silicon-alloy or other similar material softer than the material of the shaft.
