Abstract
583,348. Packing rings. BURGER, F. E. Oct. 20, 1944, No. 20364. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A packing ring comprises an annular assembly of separate and spaced bearing pads 18, Fig. 2, of hard material, e.g., phosphor bronze, each shaped to the surface to be sealed and extending around a small segment only of the ring circumference and a soft rubber backing 19. A foundation ring 21 may be used and may comprise an annular ring, an annular assembly of segments or an angle sectioned ring 35 as shown in Fig. 7. The backing which extends between the spaced pads may be grooved or recessed at 34, 39 to admit pressure fluid. The bearing pads may be spaced from one another along lines parallel to or extending helically around the axis of the ring. They may also constitute a plurality of annular rows and the pads of one row may break joints with those of the next as shown in Fig. 6. Where the foundation ring is in one piece the packing ring as a whole may be cut through to effect springiness. The ring may be used for packing pistons.
