A seal for pistons and shafts comprises a flexible sleeve c which is fixed either in a recess in the shaft housing b, Fig. 1, or on the piston a, Fig. 5, and is provided with two annular grooves f, g providing between them a wedge-shaped lip d, the annular groove on that side of the seal adjacent the pressure medium to be resisted being so shallow that there is insufficient effective surface for this pressure medium to cause such deformation of the lip that it loses its knife-edge contact. For rotating shafts, the grooves are disposed at an oblique angle to the shaft axis or arc of undulating form. In the case of reciprocating shafts, the sleeve may be provided between the grooves with two lips e directed either towards or away from each other.
