Abstract
660,045. Stuffing-box substitutes. TRIST & CO, Ltd., R., and CLARKE, C. W. Dec. 30, 1949 [Jan. 28, 1949], No. 2473/49. Class 122(v) A packing element for use in a stuffing- box surrounding a reciprocating rod 8 comprises an L-shaped ring 12 containing a pair of segments forming a ring 2 around the rod 8 and a second pair of similar segments having their points staggered in relation to the first pair, each segment being pressed to the shaft 8 by a leaf spring 10 which engages the ring 12. To prevent the rings rotating, projections 28 on the spring 10 engages depressions 38 in the ring 12 and the springs engage projections 20 at each end of the segments. The rings 12 are contained in a housing 36 the end ring 32 being pressed against a conical surface 42 in a wall 38. In a modification the other end ring 12 engages a ring which in turn engages a conical surface of the end cover. In a further modification the rings 12 are pressed together by a spring. The axial length of the two rings 2 may be less or greater than the length of the inner cylindrical portion of the ring 12. The rings 12 are a loose fit in the housing 36 the inner diameter of which need not be machined.
