Abstract

564,720. Stuffing-box substitutes. HOWARD, WILSON, Ltd., JONES, D. G., and WOOD, H. D. June 7, 1943, No. 9116. [Class 122 (v)] In a rubbing collar shaft packing of the kind comprising a, ring 3 of carbon &c. carried by a diaphragm, bellows, or sleeve 8 and thrust axially into contact with a shoulder &c. on one of two relatively rotating members, the ring 3 is shrunk on to a supporting ring 1 by an -outer metal ring 4. The latter ring may have a smaller coefficient of expansion than the ring 1. A paint or jointing material or a resilient packing ring 7 is provided between the rings 3, 1. The carbon ring may be in segments impregnated with soft metal. The diaphragm &c. which may be of metal or glass fabric impregnated and/or coated with rubber, is secured to the ring 1 and a casing member 11 by spinning over portions 2a, 11a thereof. A ribbon spring 12, or compression springs in spaced pockets provide axial pressure on the carbon ring.
