Abstract

667,875. Stuffing-box substitutes. BRITISH TIMKEN, Ltd. Feb. 2, 1950. No. 2697/50. Class 122(v). A seal for a bearing housing 1 through which passes a shaft 3 comprises a grooveforming unit floatingly located in a recess 14. The groove-forming unit comprises a plurality of channel shaped rings 8 secured to each other and is secured at each end to L-shaped rings 11. Resilient rings 12 are compressed between the rings 11 and the ends 7, 13 and periphery 6, of the recess 14. Several forms of grooveforming members constructed from rings of various cross-sections are described. Alternatively the groove-forming member may comprise a single channel section spiral ring having its coils secured together. In a modification the grooveforming member is secured in a recess formed in a sleeve which is secured in a bore in the housing.
