Abstract

652,517. Oil seals. M. E. ENGINEERING, Ltd., and JUDELL, O. Nov. 11, 1948, No. 29377. [Class 122(v)] [Also in Group XXXIV] An oil seal comprises a felt ring 31 which is split inwardly from its outer periphery for a depth of half the radial depth of the ring, and a spring 33a of steel wire or an endless spiral spring is disposed in the split. In a modification, the seal -comprises two felt rings 33, 34, Figs. 7a, 7b, having semicircular wire springs 36 embedded in their mutually engaging surfaces. The springs are arranged to exert an inward pressure between their ends and they are disposed tc act in planes at right angles to each other, thus altering each ring into an oval shape and providing an efficient seal all round the shaft.
