Abstract

521,778. Pistons. JONES, F. J. S. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34601. [Class 122 (i)] A piston ring is formed of a number of ring elements 1, 2, 3 with opposed inclined surfaces shaped so that the surface of 1 affords a tight fit with the cylinder, the opposed inclined surfaces co-operating to produce both a radial and axial expansion of the ring assembly. The rings are formed with slits which are relatively staggered, and an expansible ring such as a polygonal ring 5, or a ring formed with laterally extending spring tongues may be arranged between the ring assembly and the piston groove.
