Abstract

545,856. Making piston rings. STEVENS, A. H. (Thompson Products, Inc.). April 25, 1941, No. 5394. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A piston ring comprises interpenetrating radially corrugated annular strips of resilient sheet metal. The strip is formed with upper and lower horizontal segments 15, 14, Fig. 4, connected by vertical walls 16 and by walls comprising vertical sections 17, 19 connected by a horizontal section 18. The walls 16 and sections 18 are provided with slots 20, 21 which mate with similar slots in another similar strip to form the ring shown in Fig. 6. In another form, the vertical connecting walls are similar and are formed with inclined parts 53, Fig. 7, in which slots are provided of such dimensions as to allow freedom, and the angles between the horizontal and vertical walls may be square. The slots in one part may extend more than half across the strip the mating slots being correspondingly lessened. The ring may be completely closed or provided with a gap.
