Abstract

Ferrous surfaces are treated with a solution of a phosphate of an alkali metal, ammonium or an oganic base, at pH of 4.2-5.8 the solution also containing hydroxylamine or a hydroxylamine salt. Phosphates of sodium, potassium triethanolamine, guanylurea and pyridine and the hydrochloride of hydroxylamine may be used. A temperature exceeding 140 DEG F. is preferably maintained. A small amount of metal accelerator, wetting agents or thickening agents may be present. After treatment, the coating may be rinsed with a solution of chromic acid phosphoric acid or both or hexavalent chromium. Specifications 510,684, 517,049 and 519,823 are referred to.
