Class 126 An appliance for use with a domestic fireplace for reducing loss of heat up the chimney comprises a support for mounting behind the fireplace front above the fire opening which support carries notched quadrant shaped wings, a hinged flap or canopy which can be adjusted as required to partly close the opening to the flue and thereby reduce the loss of heat, the flap or canopy being hinged at the front corners of the wings and having lugs to engage the notches in the wings to thereby hold it in any desired position. As shown the appliance is supported by a strip 1 having a centre portion 2 fitted behind the fireplace front above the fire opening. The part 2 has secured to it wings 3, 4, provided with notches adapted to engage lugs 7 formed on a flap 5 which is hinged by means of lugs 6 to the corners of the wings. The flap has an extension plate 8 secured thereto by thumb screws 9 passing through slots 10 formed therein. Adjustment of the flap to the various angular positions provided by the locations of the notches on the wings 3, 4 is effected by moving a metal strip 11 which is secured to the underside of the flap. The angle iron strip 1 may be secured behind the fireplace front by two bolts one with a left and one with a right hand thread which pass through clips on the angle iron and are expanded by a nut into which they are both threaded, so that their outer ends are pressed against the side cheeks of the fire back sides or two set screws, one at each side, may be used for the same purpose. The position of strip 1 is adjusted by set screws 12 the ends of which bear against the back of the fireplace front.
