DAMPER CONTROL Y Lynt White, Reginald Hutchins Hodgson, Robert Henry White, and Bolling` H. Jones, Jr., Atlanta,` Ga., assignors to The Atlanta Stove Works,
UNITED STATES PATal'vrf,jA OFFICE Inc., atlanta, Ga., a corporation of Georgia'` Application June 5, 1939,'s'eri1 No,` 2:11500 3 claims. l (c1. 126-1) The invention relates to control of the dampers of a stove and has as an ob-ject the provision of convenient means extending to the front of the stove to control the draft damper and the ue damper. I
It is a, further object of the invention to provide such damper control so located as to be not heated while the stove is in operation whereby the manually actuated control means will not be too hot to be handled by the bare hand.
It is a further object of the invention to extend the controls to convenient points for operation.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodiment of the in` vention, and wherein:
Figure l is a. perspective View of a stove indicating the control extensions and dampers in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a detail vertical section on line 2-2 of Figure 3 showing the oven damper;
Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the structure of Figure 1 as seen from the right of said figure;
Fig. 4 is a detail end elevation of the structure of Figure 1 as seen from the left of said figure; and
Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
The full details of the structure of the stove are not shown as the stove itself is of conventional form. As is common with stoves, there is a damper the opening or closing of which causes the heat to pass directly from the firebox to the flue with a minimum of heating effect upon the oven, or to pass over, around and below the oven upon its course to the flue whereby the oven is heated.
In the structure shown this damper comprises a sliding plate Ill having openings I I therein, the plate being slidable to cause said openings II to be in or out of registry with openings I2, leading directly to the flue I3, to which the stove-pipe is connected.
To control the sliding of this damper, in accordance with the present invention, the plate I I is shown with an arm I4 leading across the back of the stove and extending through a slot I5 andthe end wall thereof. The end of the arm I5 where it projects to the exterior of the stove is shown as provided with a down-turned portion I6 formed with a slot Il.
A bell crank comprising a fulcrum rod I8 ex- 55 tends across the stove under the projection I9 thereof and inside of the outer flange 20 which extends around the stove top. Desrably a lug 2I is cast between the ange 20 and the outer end wall 22 of the stove, which lug may be integral with the stove top and with the ange 28, and which contains an opening to serve as a bearing for the fulcrum rod I8.
The fulcrum rod I8 is formed with a downwardly extending arm 23 of the bell crank and terminates in a projection 24 working in the slot I1. across the end of the stove through the portion 24 of the flange 20 and terminates in a head 25 to be grasped for the purpose of causing rotation of the fulcrum rod I8 and consequent sliding of the damper IU.
For control of the draft damper 26, which is shown as swingable about pintles 21, 28, engaged in lugs 29, 30, carried by the end wall of the stove, the said damper 26 is shown as provided with an extension 3| having a portion 32 formed with an elongated slot 33 for engagement by a projection 34carried by an arm 35 of a bell crank formed of the arm and of a fulcrum rod 36 extending across the width of the stove and terminating in a head 3l at the iront of the stove by which revolution of the fulcrum rod 36, swinging of the arm 35, and consequent manipulation of the damper 26 may be produced.
It will be seen that the fulcrum rods I8 and 3G are concealed from view by the flange 20 and yet are not within the heat zone of the stove and that therefore the manipulation of the dampers may be carried out by the bare hand while the stove is in use. The manipulation is convenient to the hand of a person working at the front of the stove and the arrangement presents a pleasing appearance. The fulcrum rods act by being revolved as compared with lengthwise sliding movement and hence will not in any position project to be in the way of a person working at the stove.
Minor changes may be made in the physical embodiment of the invention within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
We claim:
l. Stove damper control comprising, in combination: a stove having a top provided with a down-turned ange; a damper having a portion exposed at the exterior of the stove and provided with an elongated slot; a rod concealed beneath the downturned ange of the stove top; a bell crank extending from said rod and having The fulcrurn rod I8 as shown extends a portion engaging said slot; said rod extending from said bell crank arm to the front of the stove and journaled in an opening in the front flange of the stove top; and a manually operable member secured upon said rod at the front exterior of said ange.
2. Stove damper control comprising, in combination: a stove having a, top provided with a depending ange'; a damperV having a portion exposed at the exterior of the stove; a bell crank comprising a rod journalled in the space belowvk the depending flange of the stove top, extending I along an end of the stove in said space and penetrating the portion of said flange at the front'of* the stove; a. hand piece yon said. front extending portion for manipulation of the. damper'by the l rod; and an arm of said bellv crank projecting downwardly from said rod and.engagingsaid` exposed damper portion for operation of` the damper by swinging of said arm.
V*the end of the stove and extending to the front thereof and a manually operable crank member y 'exposed at the front of the stove, for manipulation of the damper.
