HOWARD L. PAGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HOME STOVE AND FOUNDRY COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
COMBINED BURNER AND DAlvIPER CONTROL FOB TOAS'IEPM OR BROILER OVENS.
Application filed February 29, 1924. Serial No. 695,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Howard) L. PAGE, a citizen. of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illi- Ti nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Burner and Damper Controls for Toaster or Broiler Ovens, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
This invention relates to heating devices, and more particularly to burner and damper attachment mechanism for elevated toasters or broilers for ranges and the like.
I3 One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a combined burner and draft valve or damper mechanism that is so constructed and arranged that the opening and closing of the burner valve will result in a corresponding automatic adjustment of the draft valve or damper.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for heating an oven that is elevated above the main body of the range and for removing the fumes and odors therefrom into the main outlet or draft pipe without materially affecting the function of said pipe.
Other objects of the invention are the provision of a combined burner valve mechanism and d aft valve or damper that is simple in construction, efficient in operation, cheap to manufacture, easily assembled, that may be readily attached in position, and that :35 is not likely to become broken or get out of order.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the i accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a range with parts broken away and showing the invention in position therein;
Fig. 5.2 is a front elevation of Fig. l. on a 1:3 reduced scale, with parts broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the attachmeat shown on a larger scale.
On the drawing the reference character designates a range of the usual or any well known construction. Mounted upon the top 11 of the range 10 is the usual back or supporting member 12 upon which are mounted the warming oven or compartment 13 and the toasting or broiling oven or compartment 1st. The main draft pipe, ventilating conduit or oven outlet 15 is located in rear of the back or supporting member 12 and is provided with the usual damper which may be operated by the handle 160 in the usual manner.
In heating the broiler oven 1 1, it is desirable that provision be made for permitting the products of combustion and the fumes generated by the heat to escape into the main dr ft pipe 15. .rr suitable auxiliary draft pipe, elbow or conduit 16 is provided for this purpose. In order to interfere with the draft of the pipe 15 below the broiler as lit tle as possible and to prevent fumes and odors from entering said broiler from said pipe, it is desirable that means he provided for closing off the draft through the auxiliary draft pipe or conduit 16 when the oven 1 is not being heated.
The following described mechanism discloses one embodiment of the invention. and is by Way of example only, it being understood that the details of the construction may be Varied and numerous changes be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
It is desirable that the parts be so constructed and arranged that they may be readily assembled and easily attached to the range. As shown, a plate 17 is provided on which the valve and damper mechanism are adapted to be mounted. The plate 17 is provided with an opening 18 having the flange 19 extending outwardly about the same. The pipe 16 is adapted to engage the flange 19 for connecting the oven l t with the draft pipe 16. A pivot pintle 20 provided with a crank arm 39 on its inner end is journaled in the flange 19 and has attached rigidly theroto the damper 21 shown open in Fig. 3 but which is adapted to close said opening.
The plate 17 is also provided with an opening 22 having the flange 23 extending in-- wardly about the same. The flange 28 is adapted to receive the enlarged end of the burner 26. An air control valve 27 of the usual construction is rotatably mounted within the flange 23% and is adapted to cooperate with tixed segments 28 across the outer end of the burner to regulate the supply of air to said burner, as is usual in such constructions.
A section 29 of the fuel delivery pipe is mounted on the plate by means of the clamping member which is rigidly connected to said plate by any suitable fastening means as the bolt 31. The end 32 of said pipe extends through the valve 27 and into the enlarged end 25 of the burner 26 in the usual manner. A rotating valve 33 for controlling the supply of fuel to the burner is secured to the fuel delivery pipe 29 and is adapted to be connected to the fuel supply pipe 3 1 as shown in Fig. 1.
The plate 17 is adapted to be secured over an opening in the back of the oven 1 1 in any suitable manner. The valve 33 is connected to the pipe 34 and the elbow or conduit 16 is connected to the pipe 15 and secured in position over the flange 19 as is usual in such constructions.
The burner 26 may be of any suitable construction and is adapted to be supported on ledges 340 secured in said oven 14, as shown in Fig. 2.
Access to the ovens 13 and 14 may be had through the doors 35 and 3.6, the door .36 being shown in open position in Fig. 2. As shown, provision is made for heating'onl one of the ovens or compartments 13 and 141 but it is understood that this arrangement may be otherwise.
Since the auxiliary draft pipe, elbow or conduit 16 connects the oven let with the main draft pipe 15 at a point above the top 11 of the range, suitable means are provided for closing the opening 18 while the burner 26 is not being employed, in order not to interfere with the draft in the pipe 15 when the burner 26 is not being used and for preventing the escape of fumes and odors from the pipe into said oven. As shown in Fig. 3, an attachment 37 is secured to the stem of the valve 33. The attachment 37 is provided with a crank arm 38 which is adapted to be connected to the arm 39 as by means of the link 10.
In the operation of the device, when the handle 11 is operated to open the valve 33 the damper 21 is automatically opened by the connecting mechanism and the parts are so arranged that when the valve 33 is closed the damper 21 will also be closed. While the burner 26 is being operated the draft created thereby will not interfere with the draft in the pipe 15 and will at the same time prevent the escape of fumes and odors from said pipe into said oven. hen the valve 33 is closed the opening 18 is closed and thereby also accomplishes the latter result.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a toaster or broiler oven above the main body of the range and have provided the same with an outlet and conduit in communication with the main draft pipe without subjecting the same to fumes and odors escaping through the pipe 15, from the main burners or main ovens of the range.
This invention is not limited in its application to the particular construction herein illustrated, as various changes might be made in the construction shown without departing from the spirit of this invention, or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim as my invention:
An attachment for ranges comprising aplate having openings therein, flanges surrounding said openings and extending in opposite directions from said plate, one of said flanges being adapted to engage a burner and the other a draft pipe, a damper having a pivot pintle journaled in one of said flanges for closing one of said openings, an air control valve for the other opening, a fuel pipe extending through said valve, a fuel control valve in said pipe, an extension on said valve, crank arms on said pintle and extension, a link pivoted to said arms, and means for operating said valve.
